India's telecom industry most dynamic worldwide: Ciena's Gary Smith

India’s connected population increased 40% in the previous year while the rest of the world only grew 7%.

NEW DELHI: US-based telecom equipment and software services provider Ciena is seeing a surge in India business on the back of telcos network spend including its recent packet-optical technology deployment for Reliance Jioto support subscriber base.

Ciena's president and global chief executive Gary Smith in an interaction with ETTelecom’s Muntazir Abbas said that the India’s connected population increased 40% in the previous year while the rest of the world only grew 7%.

With shrinking service revenues, do you think telcos’ appetite to spend on networks has reduced in last 3-4 quarters?

Actually, we are seeing that service providers -- especially in the Asia Pacific region -- continue to invest in their networks so that they can offer more on-demand, advanced services and be more competitive.

In India, in the past 12 months, bandwidth prices have come down by 48% and data consumption has gone up by nine fold as per Internet Trends 2017 – Code Conference by Mary Meeker. In order to keep up with the customer demands and stay competitive, operators are significantly increasing the spend on network builds and modernizations.

As reported in our fiscal second quarter financial results, we delivered more than $140 million in quarterly revenue in APAC, which is up more than 50% from the same period last year. In fact, in that same recent quarterly financial report, we stated that we recognized nearly $100 million in revenue from India in the first half of our fiscal 2017. India, in particular, continues to be a key market for Ciena.
