5G Feild trails in India to start this year by Nokia


Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia said that Indian telecom operators will begin field trials or fifth-generation of 5G technology in India, having already kick-started 5G lab trials that will also pick pace this year as telcos look to prepare themselves for the upcoming technology, which the government expects to be commercially rolled out by 2020 at par with global timelines


Harri Holma, Nokia’s Fellow for Technology & Innovation Research said that mobile data in India is roughly 80 petabytes per day, which makes India number one in the world. "So, India, in this case, is number one in the world in terms of mobile, which means that data actually makes a need here for 5G technology, because there is point of the solution, which can provide more capacity," he said, adding that availability of right spectrum is fairly critical for the success of 5G deployment in India.

A combination of low bands, medium bands, and high bands will to provide the optimal solution," he said, adding that the mid-band spectrum will provide a big data range of around 2 gigabytes per second and the 700 MHz band will provide great coverage, especially in the rural areas.
