Reliance jio downsizes asks 4500 contractual-staff to leave

People familiar with the matter said the company has let go of some 5,000 people, of which 500-600 are permanent employees and the rest are contracted. But this couldn’t be independently verified.

“Managers have been told to reduce team sizes. The areas that are getting impacted are administration, supply chain, finance and HR,” said another person on condition of anonymity.

Sources said Jio has 15,000-20,000 employees on its payrolls. However, there is a much larger number that works for the operator but are third-party employees. Third-party employees can be employed by a staffing firm which in turn gets payments from the company hiring them, in this case Jio.

The company didn’t comment on specific numbers.

For the January-March quarter, Jio’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) margin fell 5 basis points on quarter to 39%, with total expenses rising almost 8% on quarter, mainly on the back of higher network operating costs, finance expenses, and depreciation and amortization charges.

Employee costs typically range 5-6% among telecom operators and companies working to control costs tend to drop the axe first on the workforce, said analysts.

The operator’s average revenue per user (ARPU), a key performance parameter, dropped for the fifth straight quarter to Rs 126.2 from Rs 130 in the previous quarter. After the demerger of its tower and fibre operations into two units, Jio’s net debt stood at Rs 67,000 crore as on March 31, 2019.

The U.S. Commerce Department said on Wednesday it is adding Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and 70 affiliates to its so-called “Entity List” - a move that bans the telecom giant from buying parts and components from U.S. companies without U.S. government approval.

The dramatic move comes as the Trump administration has aggressively lobbied other countries not to use Huawei equipment in next-generation 5G networks and comes just days after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on Chinese goods amid an escalating trade war.

The Commerce Department said the move comes after the U.S. Justice Department unsealed an indictment in January of Huawei and some entities that said the company had conspired to provide prohibited financial services to Iran. The department said it has a reasonable basis to conclude that Huawei is “engaged in activities that are contrary to U.S. national security or foreign policy interest.”
Huawei reported first-quarter revenue of $27 billion last month and said it had shipped 59 million smartphones in the first quarter.

In March 2016, the Commerce Department added ZTE Corp to the entity list over allegations it organized an elaborate scheme to hide its re-export of U.S. items to sanctioned countries in violation of U.S. law.

The restrictions prevented suppliers from providing ZTE with U.S. equipment, potentially freezing the Huawei rival’s supply chain, but they were short-lived. The U.S. suspended the restrictions in a series of temporary reprieves, allowing the company to maintain ties to U.S. suppliers until it agreed to a plea deal a year later.

In August, Trump signed a bill that barred the U.S. government itself from using equipment from Huawei and ZTE.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking protocol that allows devices to communicate without internet cords. It represents a type of wireless local area network (LAN) protocol based on the 802.11 IEEE network standard.
Wi-Fi is the most popular means of communicating data wirelessly, within a fixed location. It’s a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, an international association of companies involved with wireless LAN technologies and products.

Wi-Fi is commonly mistaken as an acronym for “wireless fidelity.” It’s also sometimes spelled as wifi, Wifi, WIFI or WiFi, but none of these are officially approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Wi-Fi is also used synonymously with the word “wireless,” but wireless is actually much broader.
The main requirement for Wi-Fi is that there’s a device that can transmit the wireless signal, like a router, phone or computer.
A router transmits an internet connection coming from outside the network, like an ISP, and delivers that service to nearby devices that can reach the wireless signal. Another way to use Wi-Fi is a Wi-Fi hotspot so that a phone or computer can share its wireless or wired internet connection, similar to how a router works.
Wi-Fi produces wireless signal that lets other devices connect to the main transmitter for communication, like to transfer files or carry voice messages.

What is LTE?

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and is a 4G wireless broadband standard. It is the fastest wireless network for smartphones and mobile devices.
LTE offers higher bandwidth, meaning greater connection speeds, and better underlying technology for voice calls (VoIP) and multimedia streaming. It is better suited for the heavier and bandwidth-hungry applications on mobile devices.
You only need a mobile device that supports LTE in order to access LTE. You can find this in the specifications of the device. Normally, the naming comes as 4G-LTE. Also, not all devices showing LTE in their specs are reliable since this acronym has unfortunately become a tool for marketing and often misleads. Some manufacturers fail to live up to the expectations when supplying LTE hardware. Therefore, before buying your smartphone or any other devices, read reviews, check testers’ verdicts, and put some attention to the actual LTE performance of the device.
You also need a service provider that has solid coverage in the area where you circulate. It is no use investing on LTE devices if your area is not well covered.
LTE is a 4G technology and is the fastest one around so far. Its strength lies in several factors. It uses radio waves, unlike 3G and WiMAX, which use microwaves. This is what causes it to work on existing hardware. This also causes LTE networks to have better penetration in remote areas and to have greater coverage span. LTE uses partly fiber optic cables, better codecs for encoding signals, and it enhanced for multimedia transfer and data communications.
Now that we have an idea of what Wi-Fi is and what LTE is, let’s dive right into the comparisons.

Background

Released in 2008, LTE is technically designated as 3GPP technology, and is designed to work with mobile computing devices, such as mobile phones and tablet computers. At the time of publication, LTE technology is available on a selected number of phones that offer access to the 4G network.
Wi-Fi technology came on the market in 1999 with the release of the 802.11b standard, and was intended to provide wireless networking functionality to computers and mobile devices. Unlike LTE technology, the Wi-Fi standards require a router to provide wireless network connectivity.

Types

At the time of publication, LTE technology is available in various release versions, including Release 12, which is the technology’s current version. The Wi-Fi protocols include the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11 n standards. The LTE standards are produced by the collaborative efforts of electronics manufacturers and wireless service providers, including Samsung, Sony, AT&T and T-Mobile. The Wi-Fi standards are built to the specifications established by the Wi-Fi Alliance, an international organization comprised of several of the same companies that belong to the 3GPP.

Some important definitions at 5G New Radio(NR):

New RAN: A Radio Access Network which can supports either NR/E-UTRA or both and have capabilities to interface with Next Generation Core Network (NG-CN).
NG-C/U is the Control/User Plane interface toward NG-CN.
gNB: New Radio (NR) Base stations which shall have capability to interface with 5G Core named as NG-CN over NG-C/U (NG2/NG3) interface as well as 4G Core known as Evolved Packet Core (EPC) over S1-C/U interface.
eLTE eNB: An eLTE eNB is evolved eNodeB that can support connectivity to EPC as well as NG-CN.
5G Radio NR Interfaces

Non-standalone NR : It is a 5G Network deployment configuration, where a gNB needs a LTE eNodeB as an anchor for control plane connectivity to 4G EPC or eLTE eNB as anchor for control plane connectivity to NG-CN.
Standalone NR: It is a 5G Network deployment configuration where gNB does not need any assistance for connectivity to core Network, it can connect by its own to NG-CN over NG2 and NG3 interfaces.
Standalone E-UTRA: It is typical 4G network deployment where a 4G LTE eNB connects to EPC.
Xn Interface: It is a logical interface which interconnect the New RAN nodes i.e. it interconnects gNB to gNB and eLTE eNB to gNB and vice versa.

If using OFDMA has increased data rate in LTE then why was OFDMA not used in 3G, Since this technology has been known for more than 50 years ?

The Answer :The concept of OFDM is not new and is currently being used on various systems such as Wi-Fi and WiMAX.
In addition, it was even considered for UMTS back in 1998. One of the main reasons why it was not chosen at the time was the handset’s limited processing power and poor battery capabilities.
LTE was able to choose OFDM based access due to the fact mobile handset processing capabilities and battery performance have both improved. In addition, there is continual
pressure to produce more spectrally efficient systems.
